If you’ve ever shopped at a T.J. Maxx, you probably have a general knowledge of the chain store’s process. Basically, if a clothing manufacturer hoped to sell 60,000 pairs of pants to a retailer such as Macy’s, but Macy’s chooses to buy just 50,000 of them, then T.J. Maxx will buy the remaining 10,000 pairs for their stores and sell them at a discounted price.

In their words: “When a designer overproduces or other stores overbuy, we swoop in, negotiate the lowest possible price, and pass the savings on!”

Ever wonder, “How do they do it?” Keep reading to learn more about the retailer.

1. Yellow Price Tags Indicate A Final Markdown

If an item has a yellow price tag, it indicates a final markdown, meaning that it is at the lowest price it will ever go to. So, if the item has any other colored price tag, its price may still be lowered later on.

2. Purple Price Tags Indicate High Fashion

For those who like to keep up with current trends, keep an eye out for anything with a purple price tag. These tags are affixed to high fashion, designer pieces — often those from the most recent “season.” So keep an eye out for purple when you’re looking for discounts on higher-end items.

3. T.J. Maxx Is Not A Discount Store

Yes, they have lower prices, but no, they technically aren’t a discount store. Instead, T.J. Maxx is a self-proclaimed “off-price retailer.”

Off-price stores typically sell brand-name and designer merchandise, while discount stores primarily sell private label merchandise. The more you know!

If you have a T.J. Maxx gift card, it can be redeemed at any T.J. Maxx location, as well as Marshalls or Home Goods, both in stores and online.

6. No Two Stores Are Identical

T.J. Maxx states on its website that shoppers will never see the same selection twice, as thousands of new items arrive at each store several times a week. With employees stocking new items daily, you could shop there every day and see something different.

7. Shop As Early As Possible

Since each store is not identical and items are stocked daily, customers are bound to find the best selection in the store in the morning rather than later in the day. In this case, the early bird definitely gets the deals, like the one this Instagram user found.

8. T.J. Maxx Is Pet-Friendly

Ever seen a dog sitting in a shopper’s cart while you’re at the Maxx? Don’t worry, this is allowed. Take your dog to the store with you for some ultimate pet-owner bonding time. (Pets are allowed in a cart, but not on the floor, per T.J. Maxx policy.)
