Most of us start the morning with a cup of coffee or a glass of orange juice—maybe a green juice if we’re trying to be extra healthy. But if you really want to kick your health up a notch, you might want to consider incorporating some ginger as well. Ginger is one of the most popular spices in the world, and it has been used for centuries to treat a number of health issues.

It also happens to be quite tasty, which means you can drink it as a juice on its own, or add it into your smoothies or daily OJ. If you’re still not convinced, here are five reasons why you should be drinking ginger juice every morning.

1. It Boosts Your Immune System

Ginger can help boost your immunity in a number of ways: It is both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory, and it can help activate T-cells that fight off disease and viruses.

2. It Helps Fight Against Cancer

The root contains a compound called 6-gingerol, which has been found to help fight off a number of cancers, including pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Ginger works especially well at fighting cancer when it’s combined with capsaicin in chili peppers.

3. It Aids With Digestion

If you suffer from nausea or stomach aches, you’ll definitely want to add some ginger into your daily diet. Ginger seems to aid in digestion and saliva flow, and studies have found that consuming ginger could reduce nausea and vomiting, especially in pregnant women.

4. It Helps Lower Blood Sugar

One study found that 2 grams of ginger powder per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12 percent in patients with type 2 diabetes. Keeping your blood sugar levels in check can help with weight management as well as your overall energy levels.

5. It Can Ease Joint And Muscle Pain

Since ginger has anti-inflammatory effects, it can help relieve pain from osteoarthritis. It can also help alleviate exercise-induced muscle pain.
