Emergency Update Needed For Amazon Kindle Devices

If you use a Kindle, you need to read this and take action. Amazon has announced that if you don’t update your Kindle E-Reader (applies to specific models below) by March 22nd (tomorrow for all you procrastinators out there), you will receive this error message:

“Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again.”

But why? Rumor on the street is there’s some sort of security glitch and this will fix it. If you don’t update your Kindle by March 22nd, you won’t be able to access the Kindle store, download Kindle books from the Cloud, or access other Kindle services on your device.

If you aren’t sure which Kindle you have, click here and Amazon will provide information so you can determine your model. Newer devices 2013 and after, do not require the update.

If you’re not sure if your device has the latest version, select a link below to determine your Kindle software version:

Here’s How To Update Your Kindle

  • Connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi
  • From the Home screen > select “Menu” (or tap the Menu icon)
  • Choose “Sync and Check for Items.”  The update will then automatically start.
  • Note: Your Kindle may restart a few times during the update process.
  • Tip: Make sure your Kindle is plugged in and connected to a Wi-Fi network overnight.

Once the update is complete, you will get a confirmation note on your device titled, 03-2016 Successful Update. To find the note, go to your Kindle Library > sort items by “Recent.”

After March 22nd, you can still manually update your Kindle.  Instructions are found here.

In case you’re looking for a new device, the Kindle Fire is on sale for $49.99 (it’s not affected by this update).
