A Free 24-Hour Wine Fountain Now Exists

File this one in the “how did this not exist sooner?” category: A fountain that serves wine just as a water fountain serves H20 now exists. And, just like a water fountain, you can drink from this wine fountain for free.

There’s just one catch: It’s in Abruzzo, Italy along a popular pilgrimage route, the Cammino di San Tommaso, east of Rome. The Fontana del Vino opened up on October 9, at the Dora Sarchese vineyard.

Here’s a closer view of the fountain, housed in a big, you guessed it, wine barrel. The interior has sentences on the wall that translate to “drink wine,” “be happy” and the like. The fountain dispenses red wine grown in the vineyard, and you can partake of it any time of day.

The fountain’s inspiration came from a similar fountain on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain. On their Facebook page, the vineyard states that “drunkards” and “louts” aren’t welcome, and that “The wine fountain is a welcome, the wine fountain is poetry.”

They add it’s not a “publicity stunt.” (Which it effectively is, of course. Would you be reading this, otherwise?)

The Local says other fountains in Italy have been set up to serve wine, but these have only existed for special occasions. All this makes me want to watch ‘The Godfather’ series again. “Ah, Dora Sarchese. Some day—and this day may never come—I will call upon you to do a service for me.” Capiche?
