How The Prices At Aldi, Target And Walmart Stack Up

Let’s face it: Every penny counts, and it can be challenging to know where to shop for specific products to make sure you are getting the best deal.

The Passionate Penny Pincher team put together this amazing chart that compares the prices between Aldi, Target and Walmart.

It was pretty interesting to see that Aldi was consistently lower in price than both Target and Walmart. I had assumed Target would be a little more expensive, but I didn’t expect Walmart to be higher as well. I’ve never really thought about shopping at Aldi, but this chart has made me think twice.

I think this list will be a great reference guide when shopping at other grocery stores, too. If you are at another grocery store (e.g. Kroger) and want to see if that sale price is a good deal, just whip out this handy little chart.

When putting the guide together, the Passionate Penny Pincher team applied the following rules:

  • The prices were based on everyday prices and don’t include sale prices. If you find the items on sale at Target or Walmart, you likely will get a better price.
  • The team tried to compare similar brands across the stores (Walmart’s Great Value and Target’s Up & Up) but there are some situations when it wasn’t possible.
  • Sam’s Club and Costco may have better prices on some products and they put together a separate guide so you can compare those too. Click here for a printable version of that list.

We’ve just pulled out a few key areas, but you can download the full PDF that compares a lot more categories.

Here’s how chocolate chips, brownie mix, cooking spray, eggs, flour and coconut oil compare at the three stores:

And here’s a price comparison for bread, hamburger buns, chips, honey, jelly, olive oil, peanut butter and syrup:

Passionate Penny Pincher also looks at household items like aluminum foil, laundry detergent, paper towels, plastic wrap, toilet paper and trash bags.
