Joanna Gaines’ 21-Day New Year’s Resolution Challenge
If you’ve had a few too many cookies and a cup too much egg nog this holiday season (who hasn’t??), you’re probably already thinking about how to jumpstart your New Year’s resolution to live a healthier lifestyle.
And if you’re not into the idea of sweaty selfies, but love an online community that’s working to motivate you along the way, then this challenge is the one for you. The incredibly talented Joanna Gaines from the HGTV show “Fixer Upper” has come up with a way to incorporate exercise into your routine in a way that’s healthy and not obsessive all throughout 2017.
Gaines started this #21DayChallenge last December when she posted on Instagram about her goal to start the New Year by working out for 20 minutes a day for 21 days. While diving into a time-consuming new fitness regime may seem daunting—and likely to fail by Valentine’s Day—a resolution to move your body for just 20 minutes a day seems, dare we say, doable.

In the post, Gaines explains that when she was in her 20s, it was vanity that motivated her to exercise. But now, as she approaches 40, her primary goal is maintaining her health.
As I think back to my intentions on working out then—they were based solely on the idea of looking good on the exterior—in fact it was probably more of an obsession than a habit at the time. It wasn’t healthy. […] Only until recently has my mindset completely changed—I got a fresh idea of what health really means and it starts from the inside out.

Setting aside just 20 minutes a day to exercise isn’t going to take too much time out of your schedule, which is what makes it perfect for Gaines. If this busy interior decorator/contractor and mom of four can take a few minutes to work out everyday, then so can we!

Last year, she posted photos of her tennis shoes on different gorgeous floors to motivate and inspire her followers to join her in the 21-day workout challenge. So, follow Gaines on Instagram, and you can get your workout motivation and your design inspo all from the same place.

Gaines’ workouts included squats, rowing, various arm exercises and sprints—and she looks fantastic, so feel free to copy her routine! Or, do whatever exercise you enjoy. The point is to get moving and make it a habit.
