How Often You Need To Wash Your Hair Depends On The Type You Have

Ask a bunch of women how often they wash their hair, and you’ll get a myriad of answers. If you’re someone like me, you’ll want to go as long as possible, but other people swear by shampooing their tresses daily. The truth of the matter is: Everyone’s hair has a different hair type and texture, so there isn’t really one answer that fits for everyone. If you have dry, wavy hair, you’re less likely to lather up on the reg compared to someone with finer, oily hair.

That being said, we’ve broken down how often you should wash your hair based on hair type. But remember, it’s just a suggestion—to each their own!

If You Have Fine Hair

Fine, thin hair tends to get more greasy and fall flat, so washing it daily can help give it volume. However, you can use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner to try to make it stay fuller longer between washes.

If You Have Thick Hair

People with thicker hair can go every two days, but be sure to brush your hair daily so the oil from the scalp travels to the ends.

If You Have Wavy/Curly Hair

Waves and curls tend to be drier, so going longer between washes can help moisturize curls. Every three to four days is fine, but use a dry shampoo on the roots if your hair tends to get oily on top.

If You Have Color-Treated Hair

Color-treated hair also tends to fall on the dry side, as chemicals in hair dye make your hair more vulnerable to water’s effects. Use a sulfate-free, paraben-free shampoo and conditioner, and shorten your rinse time to preserve your color.
