A box cake is always a great fall back. Because while it sounds nice to bake a cake from scratch— who actually has time for that?

Well, you can fool your friends into thinking you are the one who in fact has that kind of time on their hands just by doing these simple tricks to upgrade that cake mix.

Thanks to Rachel Ray, you can finally know the secret ways of baking and have people thinking you’re a master baker.

The tricks are simple and will forever change the way you make cake out of a box.

  1. If you’re using a chocolate cake mix that calls for water, try adding steaming hot water rather than room temperature water to make the chocolate even more rich and fudge-y. Mmmmm!
  2. No matter what type of mix you’re using, always add two extra egg yolks (on top of what the recipe calls for) to make that cake all the more fluffy.
  3. For added flavor, swap the vegetable oil for melted butter. Butter makes everything better.
  4. Instead of shaving some of the cake off of the top of a layer to get a flat, smooth surface, try sprinkling sugar on to the batter right before you pop it in the oven to prevent over-rising. That way, there’s no wasted cake!

Another pro tip: parchment paper along the bottom of the pan is always a great way to ensure that it will come out clean (even if you’re using a non-stick pan.)
