Teens Invent A Vending Machine That Turns Trash Into Phone Cases

Ok, so we all know that recycling means our waste can be reused and turned into new and different items. But, what if you could watch that happen before your very eyes? That’d be pretty cool, huh? And I’d be willing to bet that you’d be even more inclined to recycle, too.

This vending machine that turns plastic into 3D-printed phone cases is a win-win. You recycle, and you get something pretty awesome in return.

The craziest part of all is that this was created by a group of five high school students. It started out as a school project and has now led them to create four prototypes.

The creation they’re calling MyProGeneration won AXA Italy’s Social ImpactAward last year, according to Mental Floss. The group told Upworthy that they had no idea their project would become a reality, let alone gain worldwide interest and earn them the prestigious award. But, really, how could something this incredible have gone unnoticed?

Check out how it works:

Place a plastic bottle inside what looks like a normal vending machine.

Then, let the 3D printing begin.

And the end result… a one-of-a-kind phone case!

Not too shabby, hey?
