As any mother can tell you, a child is an extremely precious gift. Therefore, a miscarriage, stillbirth, or any type of infant loss is an extremely traumatic and heartbreaking situation for the family involved.

Their lives are forever changed by the loss of the child and the expected future that they were perceived to have. However, from that type of trauma can come a beautiful light.

Much like a rainbow after a storm, a child born after such a loss is a treasure beyond measure. These children are being dubbed “rainbow babies” and are they are the beautiful light at the end of a storm.

The term “rainbow babies” refers to children who were born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or infant loss. These children are a reminder to the family of the beauty of life, and the hope that has yet to come.

Pregnancy and parenting blogger, Chasity Boatman created a forum surrounding this topic that instantly went viral in 2015.

On the blog’s Facebook page, Every Child Is A Blessing: My Journey From Pregnancy Through Parenthood, Boatman shared a photo that she felt expressed the true beauty behind rainbow babies. The photos, shown below, show several mothers and their children before and after birth.

Since the original post in September 2015, the photo has been shared over 130,000 times, and garnered thousands of similar stories.

The comment section alone is filled with hundreds of women detailing their own personal stories about exactly what the term “rainbow babies” means to them.

Even though Boatman herself has not suffered a miscarriage, she hopes that her posts get people talking about the taboo subject, as reported by Today.com.

“It’s not something that these women should feel ashamed of or guilty about,” Boatman said. “That’s my goal from this photo, just to start the conversation about miscarriages.”
