Ten-year-old Jayden Fontenot from Sulphur, Louisiana, was called upon to do an incredibly brave thing on Aug. 11.

His mom, Ashly Moreau, went into labor early that day (her due date was Sept. 20) and her fiance had already left for work. By the time she realized something was wrong, there was no time to waste, and her 10-year-old son stepped in to help deliver his baby brother.

Thanks to Jayden’s bravery, he was able to help his mom successfully deliver the baby before the paramedics and ambulance arrived.

To say that this mom will be eternally grateful to her oldest son is an understatement.

“I said to Jayden, ‘You’ll always have a special bond with your brother,”’ Moreau told TODAY. “I’m just so proud of him. He saved our lives.”

And these two will no doubt have a bond like no other.

Jayden didn’t hesitate, he was just doing what he had to do to save his mom and his brother.

Moreau had gotten up to go to the bathroom on the morning of Aug. 11 when her water broke and she noticed that the baby’s feet were sticking out of her.

Knowing her fiance had already left for work, she called to her son, asking him to go get his grandmother for help.

The grandmother, who had just had back surgery, was in no shape to deliver a baby, but she did call for an ambulance.

So, being the only one available, Jayden rushed back to his mother’s side.

“When he got to the bathroom, he just took a deep breath and said, ‘ok, Mom, just tell me what I need to do,’ ” Moreau told KPLC News. “He didn’t look scared, he looked calm and brave and I said ‘ok, I’m going to tell you what to do and we need to get your brother out as fast as possible because he’s breeched and he can’t breathe.'”

As his mother bled heavily, Jayden helped her deliver his brother. Once the baby was out, he wasn’t breathing, and Jayden ran to fetch the nasal aspirator that Moreau uses on his 11-month-old sister.

Moreau used it to get the baby breathing and shortly after, the paramedics arrived.

They arrived at the hospital and baby, named Daxx, and his mother are doing fine—all thanks to this 10-year-old hero.

Doctors believe Moreau’s placenta pulled away from the wall of her uterus due to her early labor, which explains the heavy bleeding. It’s anyone’s guess as to what could have happened if Jayden hadn’t come to the rescue. KPLC reports that doctors are crediting the boy with saving his mom’s life.

Besides being honored at home, Jadyen will be honored at school by the mayor and first responders of Sulphur. Rightly so!
