If you love green bean casserole, I mean really love green bean casserole, get ready to get hungry. Just in time for Thanksgiving, a new Guinness World Record has been set for the largest green bean casserole ever made.

Beating their own record for a 637-pound casserole in 2017, Green Giant is again the creator of the world’s largest green bean casserole, with their newest feat weighing in at a whopping 1,009 pounds!

In a press release, Green Giant says it took a team of 10 chefs from Stella 34 Trattoria in Macy’s Herald Square eight hours to prep and cook the casserole last week. The average bake time for a typical serving of green bean casserole, if you’re wondering, is just 25 minutes.

An estimated 125,000 individual Green Giant cut green beans were used in the casserole, which is 1,069 cans. The recipe also called for 485 cans of mushroom soup, 65 quarts of milk and 95 pounds of French fried onions. Wow!

If you’re worried about all this food going to waste just to set a record, don’t be. The giant casserole will be served to 3,000 New Yorkers through Citymeals on Wheels, a non-profit that prepares and delivers weekend, holiday and emergency meals each year for the city’s homebound elderly.

Green Giant

Despite Green Giant creating the world’s largest green bean casserole, the popular Thanksgiving side dish and dinnertime staple was actually invented by Campbell test kitchen chef Dorcas Reilly in 1955.

This year marks 65 years of the dish appearing on Thanksgiving Day dinner tables, while the Campbell Soup Company as a whole is also celebrating their 150th anniversary. According to a Campbell’s representative, green bean casserole is present at 20 million Thanksgiving dinners each year and recipes for the dish were viewed on their website more than six million times last holiday season.
