Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Disney’s live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast” is breaking all kinds of box office records. Other recent live-action film successes include “The Jungle Book,” “Cinderella,” and “Maleficent,” and the studio intends to keep the momentum going with a large lineup of more Disney live-action remakes on the horizon.
Here is a list of confirmed (and a few rumored) Disney live-action remakes coming to theaters in the future.
As of now, this is the only Disney live-action remake with an announced release date. The 1998 classic animated feature told the story of a Chinese daughter who fought against the Huns in place of her father. Director Niki Caro will be only the second woman to direct a $100 million-plus budget movie for Disney. Casting has not yet been announced for this film but is set to release in November 2018.
2. “The Lion King”
“The Lion King” has already seen a live-action retelling on the Broadway stage. So, it seems logical that this Disney classic will make the leap back to the big screen. Director Jon Favreau (“The Jungle Book”) returns to run the show. Actor Donald Glover will play the adult Simba. And, fortunately, James Earl Jones agreed to return as Mufasa.
3. “The Jungle Book 2”
With the original film making almost $1 billion, it’s no wonder a second movie is in the works. Not a lot of details have been released about this movie, so far. However, Jon Favreau will return to direct the sequel.
Dumbo the elephant is an icon at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Now, it looks like he’ll fly back onto the big screen. Filmmaker Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland”) directs while actors Eva Green and Danny DeVito have been added to the cast.
This is another Disney animated classic moving from screen, to stage and back to screen again. Walt Disney Studios hired director Guy Richie to run the production. The biggest question for this film may be the absence of Robin Williams, who voiced the original genie in the 1992 film. Whomever takes that role has a mighty big voice and performance to fill.
6. “Winnie the Pooh”/ “Christopher Robin”
Right now, it’s uncertain if the working title of this Disney live-action remake is “Winnie the Pooh” or “Christopher Robin.” With the story supposedly focused on an adult Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre Wood, it seems that he’d be the title character. “Finding Neverland” director Marc Forster will direct the feature.
It might be hard to imagine “La La Land” actress Emma Stone playing the puppy-stealing villain Cruella-de-Vil. However, Stone is slated to play her in the Disney live-action movie retelling of “One Hundred and One Dalmations.”
8. “Tinker Bell”
Peter Pan’s fairy friend Tinker Bell will be the central character in this film focusing on Tink’s “untold story.” Actress Reese Witherspoon is not only a producer of this movie, but also looks to star in the feature.
Not many details on this potential Disney live-action remake. Peter Hedges (“The Life of Timothy Green”) has been reportedly working on a script, but not much else is known about the progress of this film.
10. “Maleficent 2”
Angelina Jolie starred in the original “Maleficent” back in 2014. The movie was a Disney live-action re-telling of the backstory of the “Sleeping Beauty” witch. As of 2016, Jolie has agreed to star in the sequel and “Maleficent” writer Linda Woolverton will also return.
11. “The Little Mermaid”
Disney wants to bring fans back “Under the Sea” with this live-action remake of Ariel’s story. Fans of the animated movie’s music will love that original composer Alan Menken will return, along with Lin-Manual Miranda, for the sequel.
12. “Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs”
Vanity Fair reported that a Snow White sequel is in the works. Although there is no release date set, Erin Cressida Wilson (“The Girl on the Train”) will write the script and “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will tackle the music.
