15 Of The Biggest And Most Beautiful Celebrity Engagement Rings Of All Time

Famous brides have been sporting serious bling long before celebs like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian came onto the scene with their super-sized sparklers. If you’re already making headlines, your engagement ring is going to come under a lot of scrutiny, too. Some stand out for their historic significance, others for their gorgeous design and still others because they’re plain old GIGANTIC.

Here are 15 of our favorite famous engagement rings. Prepare to swoon!

HISTORICAL

1. Wallis Simpson

The Duchess of Windsor, aka Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee for whom King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne, wore a 19.77-carat emerald with accent diamonds. The ring was later reset on a different band, but Edward engraved the original gold band with a very romantic inscription: “We are ours now 27 X 36,” which is shorthand for the day they got engaged, Oct. 27, 1936.

2. Princess Grace of Monaco

When actress Grace Kelly got engaged to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, she received a massive Cartier ring. She made the 10.47-carat, emerald-cut diamond surrounded by two diamond baguettes a permanent fixture on her finger after that, including in her last film, “High Society.”

3. Jackie Kennedy Onassis

When future President John F. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, he did it with a 2.88-carat diamond surrounded by 2.84 carats in emerald and baguette accents on a gold band. The ring was redone in 1963 to add 2.12-carats more of diamonds.

When Jackie Kennedy married Aristotle Onassis several years after JFK’s death, her second ring was much more of a rock. The marquise-cut diamond measured 40.42 carats, came from the famed Lesotho diamond, and sold for $2.59 million after her death.

4 & 5. Princess Diana And The Duchess Of Cambridge

Could there be a more recognizable engagement ring? Princess Diana once said she picked out her 18-carat, oval sapphire and diamond engagement ring from Prince Charles because, “It was the biggest.” But she also set off a trend for colored stones back in 1981.

After Diana’s son, Prince William, proposed to his fiancee, Kate Middleton, in 2010 with the same ring his mother had worn, the rare blue jewel saw another jump in popularity. The ring’s original value was $60,000 but is now valued at closer to $500,000.

6. Elizabeth Taylor

Diamond-lover Elizabeth Taylor married eight times, and two of those marriages were to Richard Burton, with whom she had a lifelong, passionate but turbulent connection. So it makes sense that the ring Burton gave her during their first marriage together was an overwhelming 33-carat diamond ring. Imagine how heavy it was to wear.

7. Kim Kardashian

When Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian in October 2013, she received a 15-carat, cushion-cut diamond valued at $1.5 million. Apparently that ring needed a companion, because West later got Kardashian a second, larger diamond engagement ring. Robbers stole that 20-carat, $4.9-million ring off Kardashian in her Paris hotel room.

8. Beyonce

Beyonce’s latest headline-making news is that she’s pregnant with twins. But back when she first showed up in public wearing an 18-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring worth $5 million, it sparked a whirlwind of attention. The pop star is famously private about her personal life with husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy.

9. Lydia Hearst

Lydia Hearst, daughter of Patricia Hearst and great-granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, has a distinguished family heritage. So when she got engaged to TV host Chris Hardwick, the candy ring he pulled out was just a placeholder. Lydia’s real ring is a large diamond sparkler that belonged to her grandmother, Catherine Hearst.

When Jennifer Aniston got engaged to fellow actor Justin Theroux, she got an 8-carat, radiant-cut diamond. “He rocked it up. It took me a while to get used to it. I’m not a diamond girl. I’m more Indian jewelry and stuff,” she told The New York Times.

13. Anna Kournikova

Rumor has it Anna Kournikova is already secretly married to Enrique Iglesias. But, in the meantime we can just stare at her two sparkly rings. She has a large yellow diamond and an 11-carat, pink, pear-shaped diamond with white diamond accents.

15. Mariah Carey

They have since broken up, but when billionaire James Packer proposed to Mariah Carey last year, he did it with perhaps the biggest celebrity engagement ring so far. The 35-karat, $7.5 million ring was even bigger than the gigantic Taylor-Burton ring. Carey’s friend, jewelry designer Wilfredo Rosado, designed the ring to be “a ring that could not be measured up to,” he told Vogue.
