3 Fake-Healthy Foods You Should Stop Spending Money On
The food world is facing an interesting dichotomy of late. Half of the time we’re obsessed with towering fried chicken sandwiches with every fixin’ and the other half of the time we’re mainlining green juice. The ultra-healthy food sector isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but it’s also good to know exactly what you should (and shouldn’t!) be eating if you really want to be eating healthfully. Here are three allegedly healthy foods that you should stop wasting your money on.
1. Juices
Everyone and their mother seems to have done a juice cleanse lately, but science says there’s absolutely no reason you should put yourself through a week of kale pulp. In fact, cold-pressed juices are significantly worse for you than an actual salad because they contain all of the sugars in fruits and vegetables but none of the fiber. You’re better off just eating a piece of fruit and having some veggies with lunch or dinner.

Though there are plenty of new bars on the market that are lower in processed sugars and added ingredients (Larabar, RXBar and others are great options), there are too many varieties out there that are total sugar and carb bombs. With many clocking in at 200 calories or more, these are only necessary if you’re really not getting enough protein from your regular diet. You’re better off stashing some homemade trail mix with nuts and unsweetened dried fruit in your bag to avoid getting hangry after the gym.
3. Gluten-Free Foods
Unless you absolutely cannot eat gluten for medical reasons, stop eating gluten-free food! Many of these packaged, processed items are higher in sugar and cruddy ingredients. On top of the fact that these foods are typically sold at a huge markup to regular, gluten-filled items, you’re better off eating simple, whole-grain foods if you can. There’s no need to transition to rice flour if wheat does the trick.
