4 Simple Ways To Increase Brain Cell Production

You know when you have a long day and you feel like your brain is no longer functioning? Have you ever thought to yourself, I need to replenish my brain cells?

According to Neuroscientist, Sandrine Thuret’s TED Talk, it is possible for adults to generate new brain cells. She calls it neurogenesis, and suggests that we can actually control it.

Thuret claims that humans create up to 700 new neurons per day in the brain. And by the time a human turns 50, they will have exchanged old neurons with new ones. So how can we help increase neurogenesis?

  1. Have more sex.
  2. Learn new things.
  3. Engaging in physical activity like running to increase circulation and blood flow to the brain.
  4. A healthy diet that includes things like Folic Acid, Flavonoids (found in blueberries and dark chocolate), intermittent fasting (spacing out your meals) and Omega 3 fatty acids (found in salmon) can help promote neurogenesis.

Thuret is careful to point out that there are some things that can decrease brain cell production. I’ve listed a few of them here:

  • Stress
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Getting older
  • A diet high in saturated fat, alcohol and deficient in Vitamin B & E

Her suggestions seem pretty easy to accomplish, right? A few subtle changes to your daily habits and diet can help optimize brain cell production. Ready. Set. Grow!
