This 89-year-old woman knitted 450 blankets and coats for shelter dogs

When it comes to working with shelter animals, there’s no shortage of opportunities at local rescue organizations.

Whether you’re interested in walking dogs, fostering, cleaning out kennels or assisting with adoption events, most local rescue organizations are grateful for the help they receive from volunteers.

However, one British woman has found a unique way to give back to animals in need: She knits sweaters and blankets to keep them warm!

The woman, Maisie Green, has reportedly used her special skills to knit hundreds of dog coats and blankets over the years. All of them have been donated to the rescue dogs at the Dogs Trust Basildon shelter in the United Kingdom.

“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully!” Green told Dogs Trust Basildon. “It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat.”

That means she has likely spent a ton of her time knitting, all to benefit dogs who are looking for new homes. Green works in batches and her family members help drive her to the shelter three times a year to drop off the knitted donations.

Green says that knitting has provided her with a purpose.

“It keeps me busy and often I like to knit whilst watching television,” Green said. “I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way.”

Dogs Trust Basildon notes that by December 2018, this prolific volunteer had knitted 450 items to keep shelter animals warm.

The dogs at the shelter sure seem to love their knitted items, whether they’re Green’s work or from somewhere else! And the pups sure look adorable using them, too.

Dogs Trust is one of the U.K.’s largest dog rescue organizations and provides care for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year. The organization offers many ways for volunteers to get involved.

This is such a sweet way to give back! We’re sure the dogs are grateful to Maisie Green for her lovely contributions.
