A ‘Frasier’ Reboot Is In The Works

Move over, “Will & Grace” and “The Conners.” Another popular 1990s sitcom may be coming back to TV. Actor Kelsey Grammer, who played the title character on the TV series “Frasier” from 1993 to 2004, recently appeared on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” and revealed that a reboot of “Frasier” may be in the works.

Mentioning that there is an “appetite” to see the show come back, Grammer said that he is in talks with a group of writers about a new story for the fictional Seattle psychologist. The actor stressed that, unlike “Will & Grace,” a “Frasier” reboot would not pick up where the characters left off but rather would be a “third act.”

The new show would also have to address the absence of Frasier’s father, Martin, since John Mahoney, the actor who played that character, passed away in 2018. (Sadly, Moose, the Jack Russell Terrier that played Martin’s dog Eddie on the series, is no longer with us either.)

“The first principle is that it’s a different story,” Grammer said. “The same group of characters but in a different setting; something has changed in their lives. Certainly, John Mahoney died over a year ago, and we would probably deal with that a little bit. Dad being gone.”

And although the original series was set in Seattle, Grammer imagines the reboot taking placing in an entirely different city. “We’re just exploring what that might be. It could be in Chicago. He left for Chicago before in the last episode of ‘Frasier,'” he added.

The series finale also concluded with several developments for the other characters. Frasier’s brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) gave birth to their first child, and the character of Roz (Peri Gilpin) was promoted to the position of radio station manager. Although he didn’t mention what the other characters would be up to in 2019, when asked if Frasier would still work in the radio industry, Grammer dismissed the idea, noting that the character would be “past” having a radio show.

“He might be an art dealer, he might be a professor. We don’t know yet,” Grammer mused.

As for “Frasier” fans, we can’t wait to hear the theme song, “Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs,” on our TVs once again.
