A look inside the marriage of Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are one of Hollywood’s most adorable couples. Here are five interesting facts about the famous pair’s marriage.

1. Their Marriage Takes Work

Despite the fact that Bell and Shepard clearly love each other and have a strong bond, Bell admits that their relationship is not always effortless. But they know that some conflict is healthy, and are willing to be their imperfect selves even in front of their kids.

“[Dax] said, ‘Kids can see adults fight, particularly their parents, but you ever think about the follow through?'” Bell told Us Weekly in 2017. “When do they see them resolve it? When do they see them make up? And kids mimic us. That’s how they grow. We always make an effort to make them see…we let our kids see how to solve conflict and that was his idea.”

2. ‘Fighting Fair’ Is One Way They Move Past Conflict

Bell says that Shepard taught her the value of “fighting fair” and convinced her to stop storming off when they got into an argument.

“We’d get in a fight — because we would fight a lot — and I’d like yell something then slam the bedroom door,” she told Harry Connick Jr. when a guest on his show “Harry” in 2017. “Then I’d slam the front door. Then I’d get in my car and then I’d skid out the driveway and I would sit around the corner in my car. It felt so good, and I realized how incredibly toxic it was only after he pointed it out.”

3. Vulnerability Is Key To Their Relationship Success

Earlier this year, Bell posted a handwritten note on Instagram that was full of her advice for a happy marriage. Chief among her directives was to “stay vulnerable with each other.”

4. They Can Still Surprise Each Other With Thoughtful Gestures

In 2012, Bell appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to share the story of the super sweet gift she’d received from her husband when she turned 31. At the time, Shepard said to her, “I’m going to get you a present that no one else will get in their lifetime.” It turns out he’d arranged for a sloth to hang out at her birthday party. Bell was so overcome with emotion, she had a panic attack.

5. They Continue To Let Loose And Have Fun Together

The sloth video isn’t the only video from Bell and Shepard to go viral. They regularly release silly videos together, like the one that plays up their obsession with “Game of Thrones,” and the one below, which has them lip-syncing Toto’s “Africa” while traveling around Africa.

6. But It Was Not Love At First Sight When They Met

“We would not have been friends in high school,” Bell told Flare in 2013 of first meeting her husband. “He was a drug addict and he was wild, and I was very much a good girl who went to Catholic school. He is also five years older than I am, and he lived in Milford, which is a bit more drive-your-tractor-to-the-7-eleven-type Michigan, and I was closer to downtown Detroit.”

Opposites attract, though, and the pair married in 2013 after meeting in 2007.

7. They Now Share Parenting Duties, Including Diaper Duty

Bell and Shepard have two daughters together: 3-year-old Delta and 5-year-old Lincoln. Earlier this year, during an episode of Shepard’s podcast, “Armchair Expert,” Shepard shared that they try to keep their parenting as equitable as possible.

“I really will say I do fifty-percent of the sh** with these kids,” he said. “I definitely change more than my share of diapers, and I’ve exceeded what I think my father certainly did. But the one thing that now has evolved, and I thank [Bell] so much for this, is she now gets up with the kids. Because I’ll get up with them, but then I’m up for another forty minutes. She can get up and then come back to sleep, and she’s out in thirty seconds. And then we just realized, I just can’t do it because I’ll be up all night long.”
