A new Spice Girls movie is in the works

It’s been over a year since the Spice Girls announced that they were working together again after 18 years apart. About nine months later, the iconic girl group shared news of a reunion tour — though Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) was unable to participate. And now, the girls are taking the natural next step: As early as 2020, we’ll be graced with yet another Spice Girls movie.

You read that right. The folks at Paramount Animation have just revealed that more than two decades after the 1997 cult hit “Spice World,” the gang is getting together again — even Posh Spice! — to produce an animated film.

There’s not much known yet about the film, because, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the project is still in the early stages of development.

The good news is that all five of the group’s members — Beckham, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie “Mel B” Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm (Sporty Spice), and Geri Halliwell Horner (Ginger Spice) — are involved.

Given that the new Spice Girls movie will be animated, we have to wonder if the women will lend their voices to the film. At the very least, we know the flick will include both new songs (!!!) and the group’s classic ’90s hits.

The Spice Girls’ former manager, Simon Fuller, is slated to produce the film but, beyond that, the project seems to be a product of girl power in action. Paramount Animation boasts a mostly female senior staff, including president Mireille Soria, and the script for the film is being written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith. And as for the Spice Girls themselves?

The pop group “had an idea that we’ve been developing,” Soria told The Hollywood Reporter. “They are very involved.”

The animation division of Paramount Pictures has developed such successes as “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” which grossed over $325 million worldwide, so we’re eager to see what they can do with the group that once upon a time taught us how to zig-a-zig-a.

In the meantime, you can catch the Spice Girls live in the UK this week on their reunion tour. In fact, they’re performing at Wembley Stadium in London tonight.

Or if that’s not feasible, enjoy this music video for “Wannabe,” which still makes us want to dance:

Are you looking forward to seeing the Spice Girls on the big screen? (What a silly question. Of course you are.)
