It was only a matter of time: According to Deadline, a new movie based on the Pippi Longstocking stories is in the pipeline.

Produced by StudioCanal and acclaimed producer David Heyman, the movies is a collaboration with the Astrid Lindgren Company, the family-owned entity that manages the works of Pippi author Lindgren.

“In David Heyman … together with StudioCanal we are confident that we have found a team that can understand and appreciate the full value of Pippi Longstocking and develop films that capture both the playfulness and the gravity in my grandmother’s works,” said Nils Nyman, CEO at Astrid Lindgren Film, in a statement.

Heyman, through his Heyday Films company, produced all eight “Harry Potter” films, as well as the “Fantastic Beasts” and “Paddington” movies. One of his latest projects is a new screen version of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden,” a children’s-lit classic. Clearly, he has a knack for adapting beloved children’s books, so this is a promising team.

“Pippi has endured and inspired families everywhere through her life force, strength of character and her irrepressible joie de vivre,” Heyman said in the same statement. “Astrid Lindgren’s books have been translated around the globe for many years — a testament to her vision which we are determined to honor with a new film.”

Known in her native Sweden as Pippi Långstrump, the red-headed adventurer’s courage and resilience are as famous as her wild braids and signature leggings. The first Pippi book came out in 1945, telling the story of “the strongest and kindest and jolliest and richest girl in the whole world.” She lives alone, with no grownups around, but has company in her horse and her pet monkey, Mr. Nelson.

Pippi’s a perfect choice for a 21st-century reboot. No word yet on casting or a release date, as the development deal was just announced and the production is in its earliest stages. But it’s something to look forward to in the years ahead!
