A retired teacher tried to buy snacks for a man who was short on cash—and it turned out to be Keith Urban

Ruth Reed is a retired teacher and current substitute teacher who is known to lend a helping hand at the Wawa convenience store in Medford, New Jersey.

Reed was in line at Wawa when the man in front of her appeared to be having an issue at the register after a card was declined. The man, who was tall with blonde hair, asked the woman he was with if she had any cash to cover it. Standing nearby, Reed, who made a resolution to help someone at Wawa once a week, was quick to jump at the chance to help the man pay.

But this wasn’t the typical Wawa situation she was used to: The man Reed lent money to turned out to be country music star Keith Urban. He was in the area for his Aug. 3 concert in Camden, New Jersey.

Reed told her account of the story to CBS and CBS This Morning shared the sweet video on YouTube:

Of course, the country star was appreciative of her generous gesture. “He thanked me and asked my name,” Reed said. “I asked him his and he told me it was Keith.

At first, Reed didn’t believe it was actually Urban, and she even argued with him when he tried to tell her who he was. After all, where was his wife Nicole Kidman?

Reed explained the situation, according to a tweet from a former student, like this:

“I said that he did look like Keith Urban, he said he was. I didn’t believe him, I asked where Nicole was and who was the lady [he was with]. He told me it was his sister. He finally said that I could ask his bodyguard. It was then I realized what an idiot I was. He graciously allowed me to get my picture taken with him. Another Ruth Reed moment.”

After Reed paid for his purchase, Urban stuck $5 in the donation jar (presumably he got the cash from his sister!) before leaving Wawa. He then went outside the store to take a photo with Reed.

“He really could have said, ‘lady, get away from me,’ and he didn’t,” Reed told CBS. “He was very kind.”

She still can’t believe she met (and argued with!) Urban, but she was happy that he was so friendly.

“@KeithUrban thank you for the photo at @Wawa. You were so gracious. I’m a celebrity with my FB friends now! Thanks,” she wrote on Twitter.

What a sweet story! It just goes to show that good deeds can go a long way.
