A timeline of Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber’s relationship

The engagement of Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin may seem sudden, but the pair have actually known each other for years.

A source close to the 24-year-old singer confirmed to CNN he and the 21-year-old model got engaged over the weekend.

Here’s a look back at how their relationship developed over time:

2011

A 14-year-old Baldwin and her actor father, Stephen Baldwin, joined a 16-year-old Bieber on the red carpet for the premiere of his biopic “Never Say Never” in New York City that February.

2014

In November the pair are reportedly photographed, along with Kendall Jenner, at the New York City location of Hillsong Church and there is much made of the fact that they are members of the same church (Bieber attends the Los Angeles location).

After photos of them together started romance rumors buzzing, Baldwin shut them down when she spoke to E! News in December.

“I’ve known him since I was so young — since I was like 13 — and we’ve just been good friends over the years,” she said. “We have just stayed close and there’s nothing more to it than that.”

Around the same time Bieber also issued a denial on his official Instagram page.

“People are crazy,” the caption on a photo of him with Baldwin read. “I’m super single and this is my good friend u would know otherwise.”

2015

The pair rang in the New Year together with other friends as evidenced by his Instagram account.

By February of that year Baldwin was still having to address speculation that they were more than friends.

“He’s just going through a time in his life where he’s transitioning in a really positive way and he needs good people around him,” she told E!. “And I’m trying to be a good friend and be there for him and support him.”

In December they again brought in a new year together and the video of Bieber sticking his wet finger in Baldwin’s ear during their holiday in Anguilla is now famous among fans.

2016

They are officially a couple, and in January fans lose it after Bieber posts a photo of them smooching.

He told GQ Baldwin is “someone I really love. We spend a lot of time together.”

Bieber said he was not at the stage in his life where he felt like he could be in a serious relationship.

“I already have a lot that I have to commit to. A lot of responsibilities,” he said. “I don’t want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility.”

The singer added that he was looking toward the future.

“What if Hailey ends up being the girl I’m gonna marry, right? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it’s always gonna be damaged,” Bieber said. “It’s really hard to fix wounds like that. It’s so hard…. I just don’t want to hurt her.”

By August the pair are reportedly broken up and Bieber had moved on to another teen model, Sofia Richie — daughter of singer Lionel Richie.

2018

In May, Baldwin told the UK’s The Times that she and Bieber had a tense time after their 2016 breakup.

“We didn’t speak for quite some time and there was a lot of weirdness that went on,” she said. “But it brought both of us to the realization that we just work much better as friends. He’s somebody I really cherish. Now it’s a very mature situation. It’s good.”

But by June fans were convinced that they were more than just friends again, buoyed by them being spotted being closer than close in Miami and New York City.

On July 8 TMZ is the first to report that Bieber had popped the question to Baldwin.
