ABC announces “Jetsons” live-action reboot in the works

If you loved “The Jetsons” as a kid—and who didn’t, really?—you’re going to be overjoyed at ABC’s recent news. The network is developing a live-action sitcom version of “The Jetsons.” And anyone around for either of the cartoon’s first two runs (first in the 1960s, then again in the 1980s) is probably going to want to tune in for the show.

According to E! News, the show will be set 100 years from now in the year 2118. The original cartoon also had the Jetson family living a century in the future, in 2062. Although, admittedly, we may not quite be on track today for the Jetsons-esque future the cartoon first envisioned, filled with helpful robots and floating schools. But who knows? Maybe 45 short years from now, we will be flying our cars through the sky.

TV writer Gary Janetti will write the new sitcom. In the past, Janetti’s helped to create shows like “Will & Grace” and “Family Guy.” So he has a few successes (to say the least) under his belt.

There’s been no word yet on when the public can expect a pilot from ABC. But in the meantime, you can get ready for the reboot by watching older versions of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon online.

“The Jetsons” reboot to have powerhouse producers

So far, executives have not announced actors for the upcoming reboot. But Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke will join Janetti as executive producers. Zemeckis and Rapke collaborated in the past, and on movies like “The Polar Express” and “Cast Away.” Reboots of old shows aren’t always easy to pull off. However, with these production experts at the helm, a pilot of “The Jetsons” sounds promising.

Personally, I can’t wait to be reintroduced to the whole Jetsons gang—robot maid Rosie and Astro dog included.
