ABC Announces A Live-Action Version Of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’

Disney movies are too good to just let fade into memory. We keep thinking of ways to recreate Disney classics, and the latest film to get an update is everyone’s favorite under-the-sea adventure. ABC has announced they’re creating a live-action “The Little Mermaid,” and it’s slated to air this fall.

After the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” film was such a hit, Disney and ABC must have decided you can never have too many live-action versions of Disney princess favorites. Disney already has a live-action film version potentially in the works, but there’s no doubt fans won’t hesitate to tune in for more chances to be part of that world.

“The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” will be a unique live-action/animation hybrid that promises to be quite the departure from more traditional live musical specials like NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live!” The two-hour event will mix the animated film with live celebrity performances of some of the hit songs from the film. Of course, all of your favorite characters will be involved. You’ll see Ariel, the aspirational mermaid who wishes she could walk on land, her companions, Sebastian and Flounder, and even her enemy, Ursula, in an all-new way in 2017.

This mix of animation and live action is similar to the performance of “The Little Mermaid” at the Hollywood Bowl. In that version, celebrities sang along to songs as the animated film played in the background, and Rebel Wilson put on an incredible performance as Ursula, in case you missed it.

If the ABC version is anywhere near as solid as the Hollywood Bowl performance, you’re in for a treat.

The special event will air on Oct. 3, so make sure to mark your calendar now, because you’re sure to be in for a night of entertainment for the entire family as only Disney knows how to deliver.

This isn’t the only exciting program ABC is rolling out, either. The network has another musical in the works. “Rolling Stone 50” will pay homage to the publication and its long-running history. We’re also totally pumped to see what the Conner family is up to when the network brings back its hit show, “Roseanne.”

There are great things to come from ABC, so stay tuned!
