Cher Was Moved To Tears By Adam Lambert’s Moving Performance Of ‘Believe’

When you dare to perform an icon’s song, you better nail it. Well, when pop singer Adam Lambert covered Cher’s song “Believe” at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors, which aired on Dec. 26, his rendition was so amazing that it moved Cher herself to tears.

Lambert put his own spin on the 1998 track, changing it from an uptempo dance song into a power ballad. He had big shoes to fill, as the single is one of Cher’s most successful songs to date.

Cher was honored at the event along with composer Philip Glass, country singer Reba McEntire, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. “Hamilton” co-creators Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Andy Blankenbuehler and Alex Lacamoire received special honors as well.

After the performance aired, Cher took to Twitter to praise Lambert, confessing that she could not find the words to accurately describe how she felt about the tribute. “Tried 2 write Feelings About Adam Lambert Singing Believe In Words, but Cant seem 2,” she wrote. “When Your senses are Overwhelmed All you can feel with your [heart emoji].”

“I Was Shocked AND Over the MOON When Cindi (Lauper) came out Rocking the house,” she added, referencing Lauper’s duet with Lambert of Cher and Sonny Bono’s 1965 hit “I Got You Babe” at the event.

Lauper also performed Cher’s 1989 hit “If I Could Turn Back Time,” while country band Little Big Town performed a Cher medley. Whoopi Goldberg paid tribute to the legendary performer as well by dressing up like Cher. Goldberg also delivered remarks about how Cher came to be one of the few stars in the world, like Sinatra and Elvis before her, to be known by just one name.

Despite her well-earned status as a diva, the Academy Award and Grammy Award-winner said she’s just a regular person when she’s not performing.

“When I’m working, I’m a different person,” Cher told “CBS This Morning” about her career. “I don’t like going up to strangers. I don’t like going into restaurants, but when I’m working I’m just another person. I’m this person who gets to be free. Cher on stage has no boundaries. When I go on stage, I have to go from my height to like, 15 feet tall.”
