Alabama football player proposes to girlfriend on field after winning national championship

Winning a national championship would be enough excitement in one day for most people. But University of Alabama Crimson Tide football player Bradley Bozeman wanted to add a little icing to the cake after his team’s big night on Monday.

After his team beat the University of Georgia Bulldogs 26-23 in overtime in Atlanta, Bozeman decided he should get on one knee and ask his girlfriend to marry him. Surrounded by confetti, reporters and a lingering crowd of pumped Alabama fans, Bozeman surprised his long-time love, former Alabama basketball player Nikki Hegstetter, with an engagement ring.

According to the 21-year-old senior, he and Hegstetter had discussed getting married but she had no idea a proposal was imminent—especially on the biggest night of his college football career! Bozeman later told journalists that he only planned on proposing if they won the game.

ESPN’s cameras captured the moment when Bozeman proposed to Hegstetter with an engagement ring he pulled out of a newspaper. A teary-eyed Hegstetter accepted before Bozeman slipped the ring on her finger. The happy couple hugged family and friends, while the bride-to-be happily showed off her new bling. Just before the game Hegstetter shared a post on her private Instagram account that hinted at the couple’s future:

“I sit here thinking about everything that you have been through the last five years to get to the point. You get to end your career at The University of Alabama on the biggest stage possible,” Hegstetter wrote. “You have carried yourself with poise, grace, and kindness throughout it all. No one is more deserving than you 75. I can’t wait wait to see what the future holds for you and no matter what it is you’ll be my rockstar. I love you with all my heart and can’t wait to watch you run out one last time for the Tide!”

Clearly this is one happy couple. But what if the Crimson Tide had lost?

“We were going to regroup,” Bozeman told reporters.

Thankfully it all worked out and Bozeman not only capped his college career with two national championships—but the love of his life to boot!
