American Girl Offers Diabetes Care Kit For Dolls

American Girl prides themselves on being a company that’s all about individuality and self-expression, one look at their website will tell you that.

The brand allows girls to pick their favorite doll (from a wide variety) or create a mini-me version of themselves by designing a doll that looks exactly like the little girl who owns it.

Dolls encourage play and allow for children to appreciate who they are, especially when the brand celebrates differences. And this company has another hit on their hands with a newly released product that only promotes inclusivity.

American Girl now sells a Diabetes kit, so that children with the disease can treat their dolls just as they treat themselves. If it’s time to check their blood sugar, they can sit their doll down right beside them and check hers, too.

Not only does this add an element of fun to controlling the disease and caring for their tiny bodies, it also helps to spread awareness.

According to the NY Times, Anja Busse, a 13-year-old who has Type 1 diabetes, started a petition to get a kit of this kind sold through the company and gained 7,000 signatures.

Now, not only does Busse use the doll for play, she uses it to educate others, and even took it to teach a class of kindergartners about the disease, according to the publication.

As far as inclusivity is concerned, this is yet another step in the right direction for the American Girl doll company. It’s high time little girls learned that they’re fine just the way they are, and if a doll can help teach them that lesson, that’s just the kind of toy they need. So, don’t wait for their birthday to roll around to get them one!

Shop the Diabetes Care Kit for only $24 on the American Girl website.
