If you’re like me and you don’t own a dishwasher, you know the struggle of having to wash and dry all your dishes by hand. Not only does hand-washing dishes take more time, but it can take up a lot of counter space, and if you’re someone with a smaller kitchen, you likely don’t have room to for a large drying rack. You either have to take out the towel and begin rubbing those babies down, or you have to make space on the counter for all those pots, pans and bowls to air dry on their own.

Believe it or not, it turns out there’s actually a solution for this dilemma, and we can thank the good people of Finland for this brilliant kitchen design. Astiankuivauskaappi are dish-drying cabinets that sit above the sink and allow your dishes to drip-dry without taking up all your counter space. Some of these cabinets are made with wire or dowels that let dishes to drain right into the sink, while others have drawers to catch the drips. Either way, these genius cabinets can help save you both time and space, as they double both as a drying rack and as a place to store your dishes.

If you’ve never heard of Astiankuivauskaappi, you’re not alone. Although the clever cabinets were invented in 1930s in the United States, they never took off here, but they did gain popularity in Finland in the 1940s. Apartments in Finland that don’t have dishwashers typically contain these dish cabinets. Even some people with dishwashers find them useful, as they are convenient for drying pots and pans or other items you have to hand wash.

You might want to consider an Astiankuivauskaappi if space is limited in your home, and you have room for a cabinet above your sink. If not, there other dish-drying products on the market that could achieve the same result. Check out this stainless steel dish drainer, which can be purchased on Amazon for $60.
