Mom Gives Birth On Eclipse Day And Gives Her Baby A Fitting Name

Freedom Eubanks had planned to watch the eclipse with her 2-year-old daughter, but at midnight on Aug. 21, she went into labor instead. Her baby wasn’t due until Sept. 3, but she arrived early and was born on the day of the eclipse.

To suit the very special occasion, parents Freedom and Michael decided to change the name they had planned for their daughter at the last minute. They had originally planned to name their newborn Violet—but they went with Eclipse instead.

Eclipse was born in Greenville, South Carolina, which was in the path of totality for the solar eclipse. Her parents believe her birth coinciding with this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime moment was meant to be.

“I kind of felt like it was meant to happen, to have her on this day,” Eubanks told ABC News.

The father told “Inside Edition,” “What better way to signify her being born during the eclipse than naming her Eclipse?” It really doesn’t get more fitting than that.

The newborn’s full name is Eclipse Alizabeth Eubanks and while the rest of the family was “shocked” to learn of her name at first, Eubanks told ABC News that they now think it was a good idea.

The family even has a nickname in mind. They’re thinking of calling her “Clipsey.” How cute!

Eclipse entered the world at 8:04 a.m. local time and the total eclipse happened at 2:00 p.m. in the area, so she arrived just in time. Considering her due date was Sept. 3, this really is quite impressive! Hey, when a baby is ready to come, a baby is ready to come.

The same South Carolina hospital where the Eubanks’ gave birth delivered 11 babies on Aug. 21.  For these families, the day marked a major event, and not just because the moon passed in front of the sun. They’ll each have a unique birth story to tell, just like little Eclipse Eubanks!
