Babysitter Creatively Uses Shorts To Hold Child, And The Internet Can’t Get Enough

Babysitting is tricky business, especially when it’s an actual baby in question. They require almost constant attention, and can’t be left to their own devices for even a moment.

For 15-year-old babysitter J’Ann Sorhaindo, the decision was between making a sandwich and keeping watch over 2-month-old Ava Pemberton. Luckily for all of us, J’Ann had a brilliant idea: She used her shorts to make an instant baby carrier.

J’Ann’s younger sister captured these hysterical photos, and mom Claudia Sorhaindo put them on Facebook last week. In them, a plump-cheeked Ava rests serenely in J’Ann’s pink shorts, seemingly unbothered by the unusual situation.

“So I had to run out the house for a quick min, so I asked my niece to babysit Baby Ava,” Sorhaindo wrote in her post. “A few min later I received a text saying that J’Ann wanted to make a sandwich but didn’t want to let baby Ava out of her sight. Lord send help this was her solution…creativity at its finest.”

The Sorhaindo family lives in Lakeland, Florida, and Claudia says they’re all extremely close knit. J’Ann is one of 17 grandchildren, and therefore experienced with looking after the younger members of her family—Claudia says she often uses her as a babysitter.

Knowing Ava is in good hands is a serious concern for Claudia. In 2011, her 3-month-old, Jenelle, died after a mistake in medication at a hospital in St. Croix.

“J’Ann knows how protective I am with Ava,” Sorhaindo told TODAY. “Some might say I’m a little paranoid. I’m always checking to see if she’s breathing, so J’Ann showed me she is making sure she is keeping her eyes on Ava.”

Sorhaindo moved to the United States with her fiancé and two other children when she found out she was pregnant with Ava so as to have better access to medical care.

“I am very thankful for having Baby Ava in my life because I thought I couldn’t have any more children,” said Sorhaindo. “And to see (these photos) brings tears of joy to my eyes.”
