‘Bad Boys 3’ is officially in the works

The last time a “Bad Boys” movie was in theaters, George W. Bush was president, Jennifer Lopez ruled the airwaves and trucker hats and low-rise jeans were the fashion du jour. It was 2003.

Well, flash forward to 2018 and “Bad Boys” stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence say that the popular buddy-cop series is spawning another sequel: “Bad Boys III.”

In an energetic video that Smith shared on Instagram with his 24.4 million followers, the talented duo revealed that “Bad Boys III” is indeed official.

The short video now has more than 2.4 million likes, which is understandable as both “Bad Boys” and “Bad Boys II” were fan-favorites that made more than a combined $400 million worldwide. Even though critics such as Roger Ebert gave “Bad Boys II” a searingly negative review, the sequel made $46.5 million in its opening weekend in 2003, and it is expected that “Bad Boys III: Bad Boys For Life” will make a similar splash.

While we know that Smith and Lawrence are both definitely coming back as Miami police detectives Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett, we don’t yet know if other “Bad Boys” stars, such as Gabrielle Union, will be making a return to the series.

However, Union did tweet this response to the Instagram video that her former co-stars posted:

Using the eyes emoji and the telephone emoji, Union clearly sent a message saying “Call me!” Let’s hope they do! (If not, don’t worry: Union is working on a “Bad Boys” television spin-off called “L.A.’s Finest.” The actress shared this Instagram post of her on the set of “L.A.’s Finest” and she certainly looks ready to revive her big-screen role as Special Agent Syd Burnett.

“Bad Boys II” was directed by action giant Michael Bay, but “Bad Boys For Life” is being directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The directing duo is best known for their 2015 film “Black,” and they also worked on the FX series “Snowfall.”

Filming is set to begin in August 2019, so depending on how things go, we will likely have to wait until 2020 to see “Bad Boys For Life.” Right now, the release is slated for Jan. 17, 2020. And while you will certainly get another dose of the characters you loved in the first two films, Smith hilariously pointed out on Instagram that there may also be a few changes:
