Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Morgan has died. He was 77. Morgan had been suffering from a form of polyneuropathy, a nerve condition. He died at home at Danville, California.

The second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros was a two-time National League Most Valuable Player, a 10-time All-Star and the winner of five Golden Gloves. Morgan helped the Reds win two back-to-back World Series Championships in 1975 and 1976.  He began his baseball career in Los Angeles in 1963 and played through 1984. Nicknamed “Little Joe,” Morgan was known for his signature move of flapping his left elbow at the plate.

After his career as an athlete, he worked as an announcer for the Reds, San Francisco Giants and Oakland As on ESPN, NBC, ABC and CBS. He was on the board of the Hall of Fame and the Baseball Assistance Team.

“The Reds family is heartbroken,” Cincinnati Reds CEO Bob Castellini said in a statement. “He had a lifelong loyalty and dedication to this organization that extended to our current team and front office staff. As a cornerstone on one of the greatest teams in baseball history, his contributions to this franchise will last forever. Our hearts ache for his Big Red Machine teammates.”

The Reds linked to the statement in a tweet:

Morgan is survived by his wife of 30 years, Theresa; their twin daughters, Kelly and Ashley; and daughters Lisa and Angela from his first marriage to Gloria Morgan.

“Joe was a close friend and an advisor to me, and I welcomed his perspective on numerous issues in recent years,” MLB commissioner Bob Manfred said. “He was a true gentleman who cared about our game and the values for which it stands.”

Morgan is the sixth Hall of Famer to pass away in 2020. The others are Tom Seaver, Whitey Ford, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and Al Kaline.

We’re sending our deepest condolences to Morgan’s loved ones during this difficult time.
