Beagle adorably snuggles man who saved him from euthanasia

You always remember your first ride home with a new pet. But this has to be one of the most touching ride-along stories ever. Joe and Schenley Kirk, a married couple from Ohio, are the co-founders of HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary — and one of their latest rescues was Gregory the beagle.

Gregory was found as a stray and brought to Columbus’ Franklin County Dog Shelter on April 25, according to NBC’s “Today,” and was scheduled for euthanasia after it was found he had heartworm. But the Kirks found Gregory and adopted him two days before he was supposed to be put down.

Schenley posted a photo on Facebook of her husband and Gregory, and you can see just how happy the pup was to be rescued.

“The BEST Freedom Ride Picture EVER!” Schenley wrote in the post. “Pulled from the Euthanasia List at FCDS today by HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary, ‘Gregory’ is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE! He is Heartworm Positive and will be going through treatment, but he knows he is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!!”

The photo of Gregory looking all adorable has since gone viral, with the post being shared about 11,000 times since May 1. It even prompted some commenters to share photos of their own dogs riding along in their cars.

Schenley told “Today” that her husband told her, “All (Gregory) wanted to do was to be touching me and cuddling up against me (during the car ride).”

HOUND is asking for tax-deductible donations to help pay for Gregory’s treatment and the work they continue to do for other pups.

Considering all the things shelter dogs do for us, a few bucks here and there to make sure Gregory keeps that smile seems worth it. Don’t you agree?

We love stories about deserving dogs that find their forever homes against the odds. One stray dog in Argentina made friends with Olivia Sievers, a flight attendant who visited frequently from Germany.

Sievers fed the dog and played with him for a while, and then went on her way — but the sweet animal followed her all the way to her hotel. The dog camped out in front of the hotel, and was still there the next time Sievers came back!

Sievers even tried to get the dog adopted through a local rescue agency, but he escaped and came back to her hotel. At that point, Sievers apparently realized that she and the dog were meant to be together. She adopted him and named him Rubio (which means blond in Spanish), and the two — we can only hope — lived happily ever after.

Then there’s the story of Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, who went to a Baltimore animal shelter and specifically asked for a dog that was “not so adoptable.” That’s how he found his dog Lola, who had suffered overbreeding and other unfortunate circumstances.

“I could not leave her at home. She has pretty bad separation anxiety,” Stanley told the Baltimore Sun. “She’s an angel when I’m around, or even someone’s around, but when you leave, she claws up the door. … She’s a loving animal. She just wants to be loved.”

How sweet! We’re so glad all of these dogs found loving families.
