If you are considering giving your home’s interior a few coats of fresh paint, Sherwin-Williams might have the inspiration you are looking for. The paint pros have picked a palette for 2020 with the help of top designers.

For their 2019 Designer Panel Survey, Sherwin-Williams surveyed 265 professional designers to find out what shades are trending, what styles are on the way out and what colors are popular across the board. Armed with this info, they have named the hottest paint color for the coming year and design styles we can expect to see more of in 2020 and beyond.

2020 Design Forecast

Perhaps the most surprising find is that gray seems to be making its way out as the neutral of choice. Although white remains at the top, beige, greige and other warmer shades are making their way back to the top of the list of desired background hues. In addition, an increasing number of designers state that black, sage green and navy blue can be considered neutral shades.

The survey also found a handful of trends likely to be leaving the design scene in the coming year. Along with the color gray, these include accent walls and farmhouse-style decorating (we still love you, Chip and Joanna!).

Other trends to watch for (or perhaps include in your own decor upgrades) include jewel tones, the color green and wood as the primary element for cabinetry and furniture.

And The 2020 Color Of The Year Award Goes To …

However, the color that stands out above the rest is navy blue. With nearly three-quarters of the designers responding in agreement that navy blue is the trending shade most clients are willing to try, Sherwin-Williams has named Naval (SW 6244) as the brand’s 2020 Color of the Year.

One-third of designers surveyed report that residential clients are most likely to use the shade in bathrooms or powder rooms. Nearly half report that these homeowners want to convey feelings of peace and relaxation.

In total, the Sherwin-Williams 2020 Colormix Forecast includes 45 trending shades broken down into five palettes, each with a name that might help you achieve the desired feeling for any room:

  • Alive, inspired by optimism and authenticity;
  • Mantra, influenced by minimalism and serenity;
  • Play, inspired by humor and energy, and
  • Haven, influenced by sanctuary and simplicity.

So, who’s ready to paint?
