Losing someone close to you is a devastating experience that stays with you, even years after the person’s death. Country star Blake Shelton was only 14 years old when his older brother, Richie, died in a car accident. On Nov. 13, which was the 27th anniversary of his sibling’s tragic death, Shelton took to Twitter to express how the loss changed him:

“Lost my brother 27 years ago today. I was only 14 at the time but it changed my life forever…Made me realize that life is precious and there’s no time like RIGHT NOW to go for it…We still miss you Richie!!” the singer wrote.

Shelton’s fans chimed in to offer words of comfort and support:

“He is watching over you, and your family, and has seen all of your accomplishments in life. One day you will be able to see him again in heaven. Until then, may God give you the strength to continue on living your life with Grace, and love. Be Blessed Mr…,” one fan tweeted in reply.

“What a beautiful message! Can’t imagine what going through something like that must be like, sending much love to you and your family today,” tweeted another.

Shelton recalled how after his brother’s deadly accident, he had trouble coming to terms with the fact that his brother was truly gone. “I remember picking up the phone to call him a week after he was dead, to tell him something,” Shelton said in a 2014 appearance on 60 Minutes. “I was picking up the phone to call him, to tell him something I just saw on TV and it was like constantly a shock to me that he was dead.”

Blake Shelton was able to continue to connect with brother through music after his death. When Richie died, Shelton inherited his record collection.”That’s one of the things I got when my brother was killed,” he told the Associated Press. “The family gave me all his albums and things like that. I just listened to them over and over again to feel like he was there.”

Later, Richie inspired a song Shelton co-wrote with his now ex-wife Miranda Lambert called “Over You”:
