How Cool Is This New Breastfeeding Emoji?

These days, it seems like there’s an emoji for everything. There’s even a guy whose job title is actually “emoji translator.” If you really wanted to, you could probably conduct an entire conversation via emojis. And now you can add “breastfeeding mom” to the list of emojis that you can use to convey your every thought, emotion and action. As part of iOS 11.1, Apple has released hundreds of new emojis, including a mother breastfeeding a baby.

“The new emoji are designed to reveal every detail and adapted from approved characters in Unicode 10. iOS 11.1 will also include characters announced on World Emoji Day like Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breastfeeding, Zombie, Person in Lotus Position and new food items such as Sandwich and Coconut. Also included in the update is the Love-You Gesture, designed after the ‘I love you’ hand sign in American Sign Language,” Apple said in a statement.

Breastfeeding moms will no doubt find the new emoji super-practical and useful. Next time a friend texts during a feeding to ask what she is up to, mama can simply text back the emoji. No further explanation needed!

In fact, there’s been growing demand for such an emoji for some time. Last year, a nurse named Rachel Lee submitted a proposal to Unicode (the emoji keyboard creation) asking them to create a breastfeeding emoji, according to Fit Pregnancy.

“I propose adding an emoji for breastfeeding as a complement to the existing baby bottle emoji, and to complete the set of family emojis. The lack of a breastfeeding emoji represents a gap in the Unicode Standard given the prevalence of breast feeding in cultures around the world, and throughout history,” Lee wrote.

People on social media seemed pretty excited about the addition, such as this mom on Twitter:

Another woman declared the new emoji “amazing”:

We’re glad this new emoji is finally here and breastfeeding moms have a new way to express themselves online!
