Something old, something new, something… borrowed from grandma? One bride in Idaho took the longtime wedding tradition to a new level by getting married in her grandmother’s 55-year-old wedding dress. And it was all a big surprise.

The photographer behind Kortney J Photo wrote about the special moment in a Facebook post on Sept. 22. It turns out, the bride’s grandmother had no idea what was about to happen until an emotional “first look”:

A first look unlike any other I’ve done before….Between this sweet bride and her grandma. The bride secretly got her widowed grandma’s dress from 1962, and is wearing it for her big day. Grandma had zero idea! Yes. You guessed it. I bawled.

The photographer’s Facebook post has taken off, and people all over the country are loving this cute twist on a “first look” that doesn’t involve the groom at all.

According to the photographer, bride Jordyn and groom Dakota Cleverly exchanged vows last week at an Idaho residence. The bride told ABC News she secretly said yes to her grandmother’s wedding dress a couple of years ago.

“I wanted to pay tribute to the dress that had been sitting vacant for 55 years,” she told ABC News. Her grandmother was “completely and utterly speechless” when she realized what was happening. Jordyn never had the chance to meet her grandfather, but her family has long respected her grandparents’ marriage, she told Babble.

Jordyn paired the gown with classic waves and a bold lip, and followed up the first photo shoot with her grandma by posing for a romantic photo shoot with her new husband.

A Family Tradition

This reminds us of another gorgeous vintage wedding dress from this year. Bride Madison Kantzer honored her late grandmother by donning her wedding gown, and the photos also turned out beautifully:

These brides show that vintage wedding dresses are gorgeous, especially when they have personal meaning behind them. Would you have worn your grandmother’s wedding gown, if you had the chance?
