Singer Bruno Mars took time out of his recent Auburn Hills, Michigan concert to make an important announcement. It had nothing to do with a new video or upcoming single. Mars told the crowd that $1 million dollars from the show would help residents of Flint, Michigan.

“It’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster,” Mars said in a statement.

In 2014, the city of Flint switched water sources for its residents. Unfortunately, the city’s water pipes never got treatment with an anti-corrosion agent. This allowed lead from the pipes to get into the water and contaminate it.

Mars and his world tour promoter Live Nation donated funds from ticket sales to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. This charity works to help city residents caught in the water crisis.

“The issues of safe water for the citizens of Flint, and access to healthy food for people throughout Genesee County are strategic priorities for the Community Foundation of Greater Flint,” said Kathi Horton, CFGF President in a statement about the organization. “These issues are of great importance to the most vulnerable in our community—children and seniors.”

Children were hit especially hard by the effects of drinking the contaminated water. Lead poisoning can lead to developmental issues and problems with motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination.

Bruno Mars: ‘Don’t Forget Our Brothers And Sisters’

Mars expressed his gratitude to the Auburn Hills audience, and also reminded his fans and followers to not forget Flint residents and their struggles.

I’m very thankful to the Michigan audience for joining me in supporting this cause,” Mars said in a press statement. “Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster. As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.

Mars joins fellow celebrities such as Pearl Jam, Cher, the Detroit Lions and Jimmy Fallon in their quest to help the city of Flint.
