This buff cat has its own Twitter and Instagram accounts

These days, a lot of people turn to social media to show off their hard work at the gym, documenting their fitness journeys and hoping to inspire others along the way. Now, there’s another muscled specimen taking over the internet, only he happens to be a cat.

He’s known as Buff Cat, and he has spawned his own Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as  countless memes. It all started with this tweet of two photos of a very muscular cat along with the caption, “everyday i think about this buff cat i encountered last year”:

People were immediately fascinated with this cat that looks like he’s been hitting the weight room, and the photos have now been re-tweeted more than 100,000 times. Buff Cat has gone on to gain more than 22,000 followers on Twitter, and more than 1,400 on Instagram.

The identity of the person running Buff Cat’s social media accounts remains somewhat mysterious, but she told BuzzFeed that she’s “just a girl who likes petting cats.” She discovered this particularly beefy feline in her neighborhood somewhere in Quebec, Canada.

Here’s a video of Buff Cat in action. He seems to have a pretty confident stride:

On Instagram, she’s started to share photos of other kitties she’s encountered in her area and promises in the bio that she will post Buff Cat pictures if she’s lucky enough to spot him again.

On June 8, the person behind Buff Cat’s account speculated on Twitter that he may not come around again until the temperatures dip this fall:

Until then, people have come up with some pretty hilarious memes using photos of Buff Cat, like this one that uses the ever-popular “you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about” meme, posted by Instagrammer thesecretvice:

Over on Twitter, user Riccardo92100 imagined what it would be like if Buff Cat starred in “Avengers: Infinity War”:

Twitter user dietrichbrah put Buff Cat in the world of “Jurassic Park”:

Although no one is quite sure why Buff Cat looks the way he does, it’s unlikely that he got his muscles doing CrossFit. New York veterinarian Dr. Dan Smith suggested that his muscular appearance may be due to a genetic mutation.

“There is a genetic mutation that’s found mostly in some cow breeds that is called double-muscling, and I’ve heard of rare cases of it in some dog breeds like Rottweilers and Greyhounds, but never in a cat,” Smith told BuzzFeed. “This might be the first.”

Too funny! Hopefully the Buff Cat is spotted once again sometime soon.
