This foot-powered washing machine uses little water and no electricity

Going green while staying clean just got a little easier!

Check out this foot-powered, electricity-free washing machine that’s suitable for apartment dwellers, campers and RV enthusiasts, as well as anyone who wants do their laundry in a stylish and eco-friendly way. The Drumi, as it’s called, lets you do a small load of laundry in less than 10 minutes using a minimal amount of water and no electricity.

Take a look at this compact machine in action:

Drumi has been getting a lot of buzz since it was first introduced by its designer, Yi Jiang, in a 2015 Indiegogo campaign. Jiang is the founder of Yirego, “a product design company geared toward providing sustainable solution through unconventional design.” Over 10,000 hours of development have gone into perfecting and tweaking Drumi’s design and the final product is smaller than your average carry-on suitcase and just as cool as you’d expect for a state-of-the-art portable appliance. It weighs just 20 pounds and has a handle to make it easier to carry.

Operating Drumi is a fairly simple process: Load the drum with up to 5 pounds of clothing, add water and detergent, lock the lid into place and pump the pedal for 2 minutes. After that, open the drain to dump the soapy water, add more fresh water and pump for another 2 minutes to rinse. The final stage requires 30 seconds to 1 minute of intense pedal-pumping action to spin the clothes damp dry, according to Drumi support).

Drumi is a cute little appliance, but will it actually save you money?

According to Energy Star, the most energy efficient full-sized washing machines on the market use around 14 gallons of water and can wash about 12 pounds of clothing. The Drumi uses just 1.3 gallons of water to wash and another 1.3 gallons to rinse 5 pounds of clothing. So the Drumi uses less than half the water to wash a comparable amount of clothing as that of an energy efficient washing machine. And since it doesn’t use any electricity and can be used anywhere, it’s a winner for energy-saving and money-saving technology.

Drumi is available for pre-order and is priced at $299. It isn’t the only portable electricity-free washing machine on the market, but it’s the only one we’ve seen that uses a foot pump and has such a sleek, modern design.

Two other popular options in non-electric portable washing machines are the Laundry POD (around $108) and the Wonder Wash (around $51). Both are lighter and considerably less expensive than the Drumi, but they both require hand-cranking to operate.

Doing laundry is never fun, but whether you’re headed on a long camping trip or simply want to wash a load of delicates without a huge waste of water and electricity, Drumi seems like the ideal time-, money- and energy-saving washing machine.
