15 Beautiful And Honest Carrie Fisher Quotes Everyone Can Learn From

Carrie Fisher was so much more than a princess.

The actress, who passed away on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack during a flight on Dec. 23, may have been best known for her star-making role as Princess Leia in the original “Star Wars” movies. But the woman behind the character was far more complex and fascinating than the beloved princess with that iconic, Mexican revolutionary-inspired hairdo—or even the general and leader she became in the new generation of films.

Carrie Fisher was an outspoken mental health advocate, a righteous critic of ageism and sexism in Hollywood, a successful script doctor and a brilliant writer. She was also fiercely feminist, painfully honest and the kind of dog mom we all want to befriend.

While many of us will remember her best as a leader of the Rebellion, we can also honor her legacy by reading her writing and learning from her words.

In that spirit, here are 15 of Carrie’s wittiest, most memorable quotes.

1. On Success

“There is no point at which you can say, ‘Well, I’m successful now. I might as well take a nap.”

2. On Relationships

“When you win as much bread as you do, your bread-baking skills are going to go down and it’s going to be harder to have a relationship. You have to figure out different compromises. Most men don’t want to compromise.”

3. On Weapons

“Even in space there’s a double standard for women.”

4. On Aging, Part 1

“Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Unfortunately, it hurts all three of my feelings. My body hasn’t aged as well as I have. Blow us.”

5. On Aging, Part 2

“I’m not happy about being older, except what are the options?”

-via Rolling Stone

6. On Women in Charge

“Movies are dreams! And they work on you subliminally. You can play Leia as capable, independent, sensible, a soldier, a fighter, a woman in control—control being, of course, a lesser word than master. But you can portray a woman who’s a master and get through all the female prejudice if you have her travel in time, if you add a magical quality, if you’re dealing in fairy-tale terms.”

7. On Fashion Choices, Part 1

“Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.”

8. On Fashion Choices, Part 2

“You should fight for your outfit. Don’t be a slave like I was… You keep fighting against that slave outfit.”

in conversation with Daisy Ridley

9. On The Power Of Owning Your Experiences

“Because I grew up in a public family, I never really had a private life. And so if those issues are going to be public, I would rather them to be public the way I’ve experienced them rather than someone else assuming things about me. It’s freeing to do it. Shame is not something I aspire to.”

10. On Negative Feelings

“Resentment is like drinking a poison and waiting for the other person to die.”

11. On Mental Illness

“One of the things that baffles me (and there are quite a few) is how there can be so much lingering stigma with regards to mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder. In my opinion, living with manic depression takes a tremendous amount of balls. Not unlike a tour of Afghanistan (though the bombs and bullets, in this case, come from the inside). At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of. They should issue medals along with the steady stream of medication.”

12. On “Beauty”

“We treat beauty like an accomplishment, and that is insane. Everyone in LA says, ‘Oh you look good,’ and you listen for them to say you’ve lost weight. It’s never ‘How are you?’ or ‘You seem happy!'”

-via Good Housekeeping

13. On Pursuing Dreams

“Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.”

-via Herald-Tribune

14. On Qualifications

“It’s a man’s world and show business is a man’s meal, with women generously sprinkled through it like overqualified spice.”

-via “The Princess Diarist

15. On Her Own Obituary

“I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”

-via “Wishful Drinking

And if you haven’t already seen it, do yourself a favor and take six minutes to watch this amazing “Good Morning America” interview from last year. It’s Carrie at her wittiest and most charming, the way we’ll all remember her.
