Carrie Fisher’s Memorial Service Was An Intimate Affair At Her Home

Someone as iconic as Carrie Fisher deserves to have a memorable send-off. And that’s exactly what took place on the night of Jan. 5, when people gathered in the actress’ home for a memorial service.

According to Entertainment Weekly, there were 125 people in attendance. Of course, that included some of the biggest names in Hollywood. I’m talking Meryl Streep, Meg Ryan and more.

Streep is apparently a longtime friend of Fisher’s and reportedly spoke at the service. She also performed a rendition of Fisher’s favorite song, “Happy Days Are Here Again.” The guests ate comfort food consisting of fried chicken, collard greens and corn bread. Fisher wouldn’t have had it any other way!

EW reports that Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, chose to have the service in her mother’s home. Her mom was known for entertaining, and this was surely a house party for the books. A celebration of life, rather than mourning of a loss, I’d imagine.

“Billie wanted the people her mother loved to gather in that living room one last time,” a source tells People magazine.

The memorial service was held one day before Fisher’s mother’s funeral, according to E! News. Debbie Reynolds passed away just one day after her daughter, possibly due to a stroke, in December.

A friend of the family told Entertainment Weekly: “The only things missing were Carrie and Debbie.” So surely, things played out exactly how Fisher would have wanted it.

The friend recalls time spent at Fisher’s home for dinner parties, much like this one.

“Debbie would sit in the corner, and everyone there would come up and pay homage. Even the biggest stars were starstruck by her. Carrie would walk around barefoot with a can of Coca-Cola, making sure everyone was having a good time, saying the funniest things you’ve ever heard.”

Seems as though Lourd made the right call by keeping this last dinner party an intimate gathering full of good food and good people.
