Today’s prom may be all about bling, glamorous dresses and limo rides, but it’s not surprising to know that prom (short for “promenade”) started as a much different tradition.

Proms were first held at Northeastern colleges and universities with the purpose of promoting social etiquette and manners in each year’s graduating class. These days, prom is less about social etiquette and more about going to a party with your friends.

And in that respect, celebrity kids are just like every other kid. Take a look at how these celebrity offspring do prom.

Maya Hawke

Maya Hawke, the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, bucked the strapless/sparkly/fake tan/big hair prom combo. She opted for a far more chic ensemble for her high school dance, accessorized with fabulous red patent Mary Janes by Prada.

Her makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who shared this photo to her Instagram, told Marie Claire that Hawke’s bob cut was inspired by Brigitte Bardot, circa 1977, and her makeup reminiscent of French actress Anna Karina.

Since graduating high school in 2016, Hawke has followed in her parents’ footsteps, leaving the prestigious drama program at The Juilliard School to play Jo March in the PBS miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women.”

Ming Lee Simmons

For her 2017 junior prom, Ming Lee Simmons wore a silky champagne gown with a thigh split, minimal accessories and a sleek high ponytail.

Her famous mom, business mogul Kimora Lee Simmons, shared a proud photo on Instagram, revealing that she had been “crying all week” and that she had also designed her daughter’s dress — which she called the “Ming Ming,” of course. Kimora also revealed that she had asked Ming if her dad, Russell Simmons, could drive her to prom. The answer was a resounding “No.”

Dia Nash

Dia Nash, the daughter of Emmy award-winning TV host and actress Carol Denice “Niecy” Nash, went to her prom in 2017 clad in a full-length yellow gown that any Disney princess would be proud of. Niecy, who is also a model and producer and has starred in “Claws”  on TNT since 2017.

Maude Apatow

Director Jude Apatow and actress Leslie Mann’s eldest daughter Maude has appeared (as her on-screen mom’s real-life daughter) in several of her parents’ film projects, including “This is 40,” “Funny People” and “Knocked Up.” She looked super-chic at her prom in a vintage-inspired satin and lace dress, accessorized with a classic corsage.

In 2018, “Welcome to Marwen” star Mann revealed that Maude had dropped out of Northwestern University because the cold Chicago-area weather was making her miserable.

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson, daughter of the late Michael Jackson and nurse Debbie Rowe, made a bold statement on her prom night in May 2016, dying her hair blue to match her date and BFF Melissa Lauren’s dress. Jackson wore a suit to the Wildwood School prom at the Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, with a tie in the same shade of blue as her hair.

Since her graduation, Jackson has carved out a successful career as a model and bagged acting roles in Lee Daniels’ girl group TV drama “Star” and the movie “Gringo.”

Lily-Rose Depp

The only daughter of A-list parents Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp is now a name in her own right, having covered both British and French Vogue and starred in the films “Yoga Hosers,” “La Danseuse” and “Planetarium” alongside Natalie Portman.

In 2016 Depp attended her high school prom in Los Angeles, wearing a peach-colored iridescent gown that may have been by Chanel, as the young model had recently secured her second campaign for the fashion house.

Reginae Carter

As the daughter of rapper Lil Wayne and star of her own reality TV show with her mom Toya Wright, Reginae Carter is used to life in front of the cameras. She looked every inch the star in her senior prom photos in 2017.

Wright shared her own excitement on social media, gushing on Instagram about “my baby on the way to her senior prom.”

Carter gave her social media followers the full rundown on her outfit, revealing that her dress was by Yousef Al Jasmi, her shoes by Stuart Weitzman, her makeup by Mimi Johnson and her hair by Rikya Taylor.

Presley Gerber

Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber’s son, model Presley Gerber, wore all black to his prom in 2016. Part of his routine involved a “sock swap” — which he documented on Instagram. Nobody wants to wear grubby white sports socks to their prom, right? Presley, who is now signed to DNA Models, attended his graduation from Malibu High School the following year, posing for celebratory pictures with his sister and fellow model, Kaia.

Phoenix Chi Brown

Phoenix Chi Brown raided her famous mom’s wardrobe for her 2018 prom outfit — a silver, long-sleeved ensemble with a collar and lots of fringing.

Mel B, aka Melanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, posted a picture of Phoenix and her prom date Victor on her Instagram page, telling her she looked “amazing.” Phoenix was born in 1999 during her mom’s brief marriage to her dad, Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar.

Jaden Smith

To accompany his girlfriend Odessa Adlon to her prom in 2018, Jaden Smith (son of acting royalty Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith) wore an edgy suit, chain-link necklace and black sneakers. Smith captioned his Instagram pic of the stylish pair with “We Went to Prom, This Picture Describes The Experience.”

Since Smith’s first movie role alongside his dad in 2008’s “The Pursuit of Happyness,” he’s gone on to appear in “The Karate Kid,” “After Earth” and “Skate Kitchen.”

Corinne Foxx

Long before she became known as an actress, model and young philanthropist (she’s partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to promote mental health awareness), Corinne Fox attended her 2012 prom in a strapless lime green gown. She has a very close relationship with her famous father, Jamie Foxx, accompanying him to red carpet events and appearing in his 2019 directorial debut “All-Star Weekend.”

Aiyanna Epps

It isn’t just moms who help their daughters get ready for prom. Rapper, music producer and actor Omar Epps added the finishing touch to his daughter Aiyanna’s prom look as he fastened a sparkly choker around her neck — a special moment captured on camera by his wife Keisha Epps.

R&B singer Keisha, who is stepmom to Aiyanna, posted the picture on Instagram with the caption, “A father’s LOVE.” Aiyanna Epps is now a college student.

Zola Ivy Murphy

Eddie Murphy’s daughter Zola Ivy Murphy grew up out of the limelight, but the world got to see a picture of her heading off to Wildwood School’s prom in 2017 in a classic pink dress.

The elegant image was posted on Instagram by another of Murphy’s 10 kids, her sister Shayne. Zola’s mom is Nicole Mitchell, who was married to Murphy from 1993 to 2006. She is also mom to Shayne, Bria, Miles and Bella.

Since graduating high school, Zola has signed with IMG, one of the biggest modeling agencies in the world.

Ava Sambora

Ava Sambora, the only child of actress Heather Locklear and original Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, attended her prom in 2015 wearing a silver, sparkly strapless dress and a large corsage on her wrist. Honor-roll student Ava currently attends Loyola Marymount University (after transferring from NYU) where she is a proud member of the sorority Alpha Phi. She’s also pursuing an acting career, making her big-screen debut as Wendy in the 2012 film “This Is 40.”

Nina Simone Smith

Jewelry designer Simone I. Smith shared a picture of daughter Nina (Nina’s dad is hip-hop legend LL Cool J) and Nina’s date ready for their 2017 prom on Instagram with the caption, “Don’t they look adorable OMG!!!!!!”

She also revealed her cute nickname for her daughter: Nina Beanz. The teenager wore a champagne-colored dress with a thigh split and matching heels for the big event.

Cori Broadus

When rapper Snoop Dogg’s only daughter Cori got ready for her prom in 2017, the whole family got in on the act. They shared their pride on Instagram and heaped praise on Cori, who wore a glitzy bronze gown with a satin skirt for her big night. The teenager has lupus, which big brother Cordell mentioned in one of his posts.

“I am very proud of you sis you came a long way thank you for being that example for the youth who have a sickness that their [sic] battling. Thank you for inspiring me to not let anything in life hold me back,” he wrote.

Dylan Douglas

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas’ son Dylan Douglas looked dapper in black tie for his high school prom in 2017. He even posed for a selfie with his famous parents before the party. Zeta-Jones shared pictures of her boy on Instagram, writing, “Prom Proud! Graduation around the corner! So proud of you, Dylan, college bound!”

Her famous mom (host of  “Live with Kelly and Ryan”) was quick to share the moment on Instagram, posting a picture of Lola in a lilac satin Alice + Olivia evening gown. After graduation, Lola started at NYU, just like her big brother Michael, and is due to graduate in 2023.

Ariana Biermann

“Don’t Be Tardy” star Kim Zolciak-Biermann shared a series of pictures of daughter Ariana going to her boyfriend Collin’s high school prom in March 2018, writing that she was “so proud” of her “balanced, kind, sweet, giving and patient” daughter.

Ariana wore a Sherri Hill strapless dress with a full skirt, covered in large red roses. Collin wore a bowtie to match. The teenager, who also stars on “Don’t Be Tardy,” recently launched a makeup line, KAB Cosmetics, with her mom and her older sister Brielle.

Brielle Biermann

In 2015, it was time for Brielle Biermann’s senior prom. She chose a strapless white gown with large pink flowers around the bottom and a matching corsage. Her boyfriend, college freshman Slade Osborne, complemented her look with a pink bowtie.

Mom Kim Zolciak-Biermann shared a closeup photo showing off Brielle’s beautiful hair and makeup and revealed that she had a hand in her daughter’s look.

“My pretty princess!!” she wrote. “I did her makeup again this year! (I almost choked her doing it) but it’s only because she is a mini Kim and acts just like me!”

Sasha Fox

Actress Vanessa Williams is another mom who assumed the role of hairstylist and makeup artist for her daughter’s junior prom night. Sasha Fox, Williams’ daughter with retired basketball player Rick Fox, wore a bright red spaghetti-strap dress with a side split to the 2017 event, finishing the look with statement earrings and her hair in loose waves.

Sasha graduated from The Harvey School in 2018 and later headed to Chapman University, a private university in Orange County, California.

Ava Dash

Ava Dash’s big prom moment was in May 2018 and her famous father, hip-hop mogul Damon Dash, shared his pride with his social media followers.

He wrote on Instagram, “My lil baby @ava_dash on her way to the prom [sic]! So happy and sad at the same time…love seeing her grow up happy and becoming a young lady but I’m gonna miss her being my Lil baby so much fun raising her [sic]…she changed the direction of my whole life! So proud of you! Love you!”

Ava wore a backless metallic gown, but it’s not known if the dress was a creation from her fashion designer mom Rachel Roy.

Gia Giudice

In 2017, Teresa Giudice of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” fame helped her oldest daughter Gia get ready for prom. Gia wore a plunging lavender gown and a matching corsage for the special occasion, which she attended with her boyfriend Nick. The reality TV teen is a big sister to Gabriella, Milania and Audriana.

Atiana De La Hoya

Actress, model and former Miss USA Shanna Moakler revealed on Instagram that it was “just crazy to me” that her daughter Atiana (with former professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya) was going to prom. Sailor Brinkley Cook

Sailor Brinkley Cook bears a strong resemblance to her famous mom, supermodel Christie Brinkley, and is following in mom’s footsteps by pursuing her own modeling career. But for her 2018 senior prom, the image was less “Sports Illustrated” and more “family photo album.” Sailor wore a pink lace dress with a deep V-neck, and captioned the snap with “this is crazy and cliche high school i love it [sic].”

Sailor, whose dad is whose father is Hamptons architect Peter Cook, went to Parsons School of Design in New York City after graduating high school.

Noelle Robinson

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” regular Cynthia Bailey shared stylish shots of her daughter Noelle Robinson’s 2017 prom outfit, showing the teenager in a pastel pink floor-length Sherri Hill gown with a lace-up back and strappy heels.

Model Noelle (she’s signed with Major Models New York) started her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in September 2018, a step Robinson found particularly difficult.

“I did not think it would be this hard to let her go,” the reality TV star wrote on Instagram.

Delilah Belle Hamlin

Lisa Rinna’s eldest daughter Delilah Belle Hamlin opted out of the traditional full-length ball gown style many teens wear to prom, and her look got the seal of approval from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Rinna, who captioned her Instagram pic, “I love this.”

Delilah, whose dad is actor, author and entrepreneur Harry Hamlin, is pursuing a career in modeling. She is signed to One Management, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Cardi B and Nick Jonas.

Amelia Gray Hamlin

A year later, it was Rinna’s younger daughter Amelia Gray Hamlin’s turn for prom. The proud mom shared photos of her teenager looking happy with a group of friends, ready to enjoy their high school dance. Amelia, who is also an aspiring model, wore a plunging black dress, minimal jewelry and a sleek half-up/half-down hairstyle. But she and her friends switched out the stilettos for chunky black biker boots.

Chloe Lukasiak

“Dance Moms” star, actress and author Chloe Lukasiak showed off her stunning dress for her May 2018 prom in an Instagram picture, captioning it with a Coco Chanel quote: “Keep your head, heels, & standards high,” she posted.

The pink and peach Brandon Maxwell gown had an open back, a halter neck and cut-out sections at the sides; the look was finished with a matching corsage, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and dangling earrings from Elizabeth Cole Jewelry.

Chloe’s mom is Christi Lukasiak, who appeared with her on “Dance Moms.”

Harley Quinn Smith

Harley Quinn Smith, the daughter of renowned director Kevin Smith (best known for movies like “Mallrats,” “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Chasing Amy”), wore a plunging black gown to her prom in 2016.

She was there with none other than Lily-Rose Depp, her friend and co-star in the 2016 movie “Yoga Hosers.” That project was truly a family affair; it was directed by Smith and also stars Lily-Rose’s dad Johnny Depp.

Smith is now an actress in her own right. She most recently appeared in the indie film “All These Small Moments” alongside Molly Ringwald, Brian D’Arcy James, Brendan Mayer and Jemima Kirke.
