‘Charmed’ reboot is officially happening and not all the original stars are thrilled

Everyone’s favorite sisterly witches are likely coming back in a new reboot of “Charmed.” After a watershed year for feminists everywhere, it seems only fitting that this cult-favorite female-centered show from the glory days of The WB is making a comeback!

But this reboot, which is being produced for The CW, promises to be a little different.

The original 1998 TV show—which starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan and Shannen Doherty as good witches trying to live normal lives in the modern-day world—will been reimagined with a progressive and topical feminist twist, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As three sisters in a college town, the women in the new version will be “vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds.”

The reboot is happening in the present day and not in the 1970s, as was previously reported, which leaves room for the original witches to make cameos. Though Milano and McGowan haven’t voiced any disapproval over the reboot, both Combs and Doherty seem less than enthused.

“Here’s the thing,” Combs tweeted this month. “Until you ask us to rewrite it like [former showrunner] Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. ‘Charmed’ belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominately the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.”

Doherty was less harsh telling, The Hollywood Reporter, “It would be far too soon. … It should just rest.” Doherty is instead focusing on a remake of “Heathers.” Despite those protests, the pilot episode is already slated to be shot. Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin, who have written for “Jane the Virgin,” “Greek” and “Selfie,” signed on to write the script, so it looks like “Charmed” may be in good hands.

And “Charmed” isn’t the only ’90s classic about sister witches that’s set to be reimagined. Disney’s Halloween favorite “Hocus Pocus” will also be remade soon. Combine that news with the fact that “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” will also get a reboot and it’s like all your favorite witches are coming back!

The show doesn’t have an official premiere date yet, so stay tuned. Looks like a new generation will get to appreciate the trials and tribulations of these spellbinding sisters.
