What is Cheese Tea? Meet the latest viral food obsession

Instagram

Thankfully, “cheese tea” isn’t exactly what it sounds like.

Because no one would drink literal “cheese tea,” right? Well, I wouldn’t anyway. But luckily it’s a non-issue for the moment because the current cheese-tea trend is actually much more delicious (and less cheese-filled) than the name might suggest. Here’s what you need to know about the latest drink to populate your Instagram feed.

Cheese tea is actually tea that’s topped with a mousse-like “foam” that’s made using a concoction of cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk, according to The Washington Post. Although, PopSugar points out it can also be crafted using a mixture of cream cheese, whipped cream and milk.

Either way, that actually sounds really yummy now. Cream cheese and tea aren’t your everyday combo, perhaps, but it’s hard not to be a fan of anything that has the potential to be this sweet! And perhaps that’s why this drink has gained so much popularity.

Scrolling through Instagram will reveal a slew of fans—or at the very least—a few people who were brave enough to give something called “cheese tea” a try.

The drink reportedly originated in Taiwan and eventually made its was to the U.S. There are shops that sell the unique drink popping up in Los Angeles and New York. But, if you don’t happen to live in an area where you can buy one of these teas, they seem pretty easy to make at home.

As you can see in the video, it may take a few tries to get the flavor and consistency just right, but once they nailed the sweetness and frothiness, they really liked the outcome.

But based on the reactions on Twitter, some people remain unimpressed. There are those who haven’t tried it—and don’t plan to.

But others say they’ve had it and it’s quite good.

Would you give cheese tea a shot?
