Chick-fil-A now offers gluten-free buns

Following a gluten-free diet can feel very restrictive. However, as more and more people start to say ‘no’ to gluten, it’s becoming easier (and more affordable) to follow a celiac-friendly diet.

In fact, you can now find gluten-free fare at fast food joints. Chick-fil-A has just announced that they are debuting a gluten-free bun. The bun is made with ground quinoa, sorghum and amaranth and dusted with cornmeal. It is lightly sweetened with molasses and raisins.

It is individually packaged so that there is no fear of cross-contamination from Chick-fil-A’s other items which contain wheat and wheat by-products. However, this will mean that gluten-free diners will have to assemble their own sandwiches before they can dive in, so don’t be surprised when your chicken sandwich requires a couple seconds of prep on your end.

The bun is 150 calories, which makes it a smart choice for people who are counting calories as well as eliminating gluten. However, there is one catch: The gluten-free bun will cost you an additional $1.15.

While the cost may make you cringe a little, the reality is that the bun is made with premium ingredients like quinoa and amaranth. The team at Chick-fil-A says that test diners have been raving about the gluten-free bun, and they believe that this is because they are using high-quality ingredients like ancient grains instead of just using rice flour.

Chick-fil-A is the first fast food chain to offer diners a gluten-free bun option, but I bet it won’t be long before other causal dining spots start to follow suit. That’s great news for people who are sick of ordering “bun-less” burgers and sandwiches!
