You Can Chill A Drink In 2 Minutes With This Trick

Adobe

You know the feeling, you come home from a long day, ready to crack open a cold drink, only to realize you forgot to load the fridge with your favorite beer or soda. And now the last thing you want to do is wait for for your drink to chill.

Luckily, if you’re in a rush, or for the times when you don’t have a fridge to put your drink in, this handy little trick using only water, ice, and salt will cool down your drink in just two minutes. That’s right, just two minutes!

Here’s What You Do

Begin by filling up a bowl with a little bit of water and some ice. That part seems obvious, but it could still take awhile for the surrounding ice to cool your drink. That’s where salt comes in. Add a few tablespoons of salt to the water-and-ice mixture, then place your can or bottle in the bowl. The salt will help the ice melt faster, rapidly cooling down your drink.

So how does this work? The salt lowers the freezing point of the water, which means the ice begins melting at a lower temperature than it usually would. Your drink is fully surrounded by very cold water, meaning the maximum amount of the the can or bottle’s surface area is exposed to a chilling agent. (Whereas, if it were just “on ice,” the cubes may not fully touch all parts of the can or bottle.)

Go ahead and give it a try. If you want more detailed instructions, check out this video for reference:
