Chocolate Cherry Brownies Have A Surprising Ingredient That Makes Them So Rich
Is there such a thing as too many dessert recipes? I think not. Even if you have an entire collection, it is my belief that there is always room for trying something new.
Next on my list? Chocolate-cherry brownies. The recipe comes from the ultimate baking gurus at Betty Crocker and features a surprising ingredient that adds to the cherry flavor.
Along with brownie mix and other ingredients you would expect, like vegetable oil and eggs, you’ll also need to pick up some maraschino cherries, chocolate chips, and cherry-flavored cola. Yes, cola.
You’ll only be using 1/4 cup of cola for the entire recipe, but Betty Crocker says the fizzy addition of the soft drink gives the brownies a boost of cherry flavor. You’ll also be stirring cherries right into the batter and putting them on top, so this is not a dessert for those that just like cherries.
The recipe itself couldn’t be any easier. All you do is mix up the ingredients, pour them in a pan and then sprinkle chocolate chips, cherries and melted chocolate drizzle on top once they’re out of the oven.
The recipe calls for storing them loosely covered in the refrigerator, so if you plan on taking them anywhere, be aware of that. You’ll also need to let them stand for two hours or until the chocolate is set, so it might not be the best recipe if you’re in need of a quick dessert.

Surprisingly, this is not the only dessert recipe that calls for the use of soda. This cherry Dr. Pepper cake sounds pretty close to the brownies if you’re looking for something similar, but it’s in cake form.
If you’re a lemon fan, you can also try this recipe for lemon-y 7Up pound cake. Or, here’s a few root beer float pie and cake recipes if that’s more your thing!
