Chocolate Necco wafers are coming back to stores

One year after Necco Wafers returned to store shelves following a two-year absence, Spangler Candy Company has announced the return of another classic fan-favorite: the Necco Chocolate Wafer Roll.

While Necco Wafer rolls typically have eight different flavors and colors, the Necco Chocolate Wafer Roll has 40 all-chocolate wafers in place of the usual assortment. Available online now (in 24-count trays) and in select stores this spring, the return comes after consumers asked Spangler to bring back the chocolate flavor.

“Once we brought back the original assorted roll of Necco Wafers this past summer, the demand for the Chocolate Roll was almost instantaneous,” Diana Eschhofen, Spangler Candy’s director, corporate communications, said in a press release. “We know this has been a long-awaited return, and we’re ready to give chocolate candy lovers something they’ve been missing.”

Necco Wafers disappeared from store shelves in 2018 following the closure of the New England Confectionary Company, or Necco. They returned in the summer of 2020 after the brand was purchased by the Spangler Candy Company.

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying they’re a classic candy. First created in 1847, they were even carried by soldiers during the Civil War and sustained explorers on expeditions to the North and South Poles in the early 1900s.

Spangler Candy Company brought back all eight flavors — lemon (yellow), lime (green), orange (orange), clove (light purple), cinnamon (white), wintergreen (pink) and licorice (dark grey) — of the thin, round candy. They are even packaged the same way, with wax paper, and have the same logo.

Founded in 1906, Spangler is a family-created company that makes candies like Dum-Dums and Circus Peanuts.

With the purchase of Necco, they also saved a handful of other candies including Mary Janes, Clark Bars and Sweethearts, the iconic candy hearts that appear in stores for Valentine’s Day with messages like “Be Mine” and “Kiss Me.”
